What to do in Antigua on a cruise stop
Quick answer
Antigua sells itself on beaches — 365 of them, the tourist board likes to say — but the port day hinges on one decision: stay near St. John's for an easy beach-and-town day, or spend 40 minutes each way crossing the island to Nelson's Dockyard, the Caribbean's great Georgian naval base. A typical call is about 10 hours, so the Dockyard is very doable — do it first, then decide if a beach still fits.

How busy does it get?
Antigua runs smaller and calmer than the big western-Caribbean ports: a typical cruise day lands about 3,800 passengers, with peak scheduled days around 16,500. Our schedules are winter-weighted — January and December are the peak, and calls tail off through spring.
Your own day can land anywhere in that range — check your date on the Antigua crowd calendar before you plan around the crowds.

Weather, in visitor terms
Warm all year, highs of 81–86°F. December to April is the drier half of the year, though Antigua never gets truly dry — expect the chance of a shower on about 4 days in 10 even then. August to October is the wettest stretch, with rain on roughly 6 days in 10.

Two ways to spend the day
If you have ~4 hours
- Museum of Antigua and Barbuda in the old courthouse on Long Street
- St. John's Cathedral (St. John the Divine), the twin-towered landmark above town
- Taxi to Dickenson Bay for swim time, or stay closer at Fort James and Fort James Beach
- Taxi back to Heritage Quay
Dickenson Bay and Fort James Beach are interchangeable here — Fort James is closest to the port, Dickenson Bay has the bigger beach scene.
Full day
- Taxi across the island to Nelson's Dockyard National Park, English Harbour (about 40 minutes)
- Take in Shirley Heights above the harbour for the view down to the dockyard
- Stop at Devil's Bridge, Indian Town on the east-coast return if time allows
- Back in St. John's for the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda if you missed it in the morning
Shirley Heights hosts its famous Sunday-afternoon party, but only Sunday calls can time it — the lookout itself is worth the stop any day.
Getting around from the ship
Most ships dock at Heritage Quay in St. John's, where Antigua Cruise Port's address is Heritage Quay, Thames Street, and the town's cathedral, museum and shops are walkable from the quay. Visit Antigua & Barbuda says the island is 108 square miles and you can travel from point A to point B in about 45 minutes or less, by fixed-fare taxi or by bus from the East or West Bus Stations in St. John's.
| Option | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Walk into St. John's | Free approx. | Heritage Quay is in St. John's itself; the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda on Long Street and St. John's Cathedral are listed by Antigua Cruise Port as top attractions in the town, walkable from the quay. |
| Taxi | Taxis are readily available with fixed fares to key destinations like the airport and English Harbour; Visit Antigua & Barbuda says fares are fixed and posted at the airport and taxi stands, and taxis are typically shared. | |
| Local bus | Buses run 5:30 AM-6 PM with regular service between St. John's and surrounding villages, from bus stops and the East or West Bus Station; the tourism board warns schedules can be unpredictable. No official fare amount was published on the page checked, so none is quoted here. | |
| Minibus taxis and rental car | Minibus ('bus taxi') vans operate on set routes throughout the island and are an affordable way to get around, per Visit Antigua & Barbuda. Rental cars are also listed, requiring a valid home licence plus a temporary Antigua driving permit (EC$50 fee for a visitor driving permit is stated on the same page for car rental context). |

Cruise-stop questions
How far is Nelson's Dockyard from the Antigua cruise port?
About 40 minutes by taxi each way, across the island to the south coast. That is why it anchors our full-day plan rather than the short one — but it is a UNESCO-listed Georgian naval base, and it is the trip most Antigua visitors remember.
What is the closest beach to the Antigua cruise port?
Two good ones: Dickenson Bay, the classic resort beach on the northwest coast a short taxi from St. John's, and Fort James Beach at the harbour entrance, even closer to the port. Both are free to access; you pay for chairs, food and taxis.
What can you do in St. John's without a taxi?
The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda and the twin-towered St. John's Cathedral are both in the town centre, a walk from Heritage Quay. Together they make an easy, cheap first hour ashore before you commit to a taxi.
How does Stingray City Antigua work?
It is a boat excursion to a shallow sandbar where southern rays gather, run as an organised tour (the official site sells direct). Book the earliest departure so the rest of the day stays usable.
