What to do in Cozumel on a cruise stop

Quick answer

Cozumel is a reef-and-ruins island: the snorkelling and diving off its west coast are the draw, with the San Gervasio Mayan ruins as the land option. Which of the three cruise piers you dock at shapes the day — Punta Langosta lands you in downtown San Miguel, while the two southern piers are a taxi ride from everything. A typical call is about 9 hours, enough for one anchor: Chankanaab for an easy beach-and-snorkel day, or Punta Sur for the island's best wild beach.

Hot and tropical all year — highs of 79–88°F — with a clear wet season. February to April is the driest, sunniest window (rain on roughly a quarter of days). September and October are the wettest months, with rain on nearly two-thirds of days, though it usually arrives as downpours rather than all-day washouts.

Palancar & Colombia Reefs + El Cielo snorkel trip

Passenger ferry to Playa del Carmen (DIY mainland trip)

Ultramar (and Winjet) run passenger ferries between Cozumel's downtown Fiscal Pier and Playa del Carmen on the mainland; Playa Palancar's official site puts the crossing at approximately 35 minutes. It opens up Fifth Avenue and the Riviera Maya, but it is a time commitment: two crossings plus waiting time eat into a port day, so check the operator's current schedule and leave a wide buffer for your all-aboard time.

Two ways to spend the day

If you have ~4 hours

  1. Taxi to Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park (about 10 minutes from the southern piers)
  2. Snorkel the reef right off the beach, then beach time
  3. Taxi straight back to the pier with an hour to spare

From Punta Langosta, swap the park for San Miguel town & waterfront plus the Cozumel Island Museum — no taxi needed.

Full day

  1. Start inland at the San Gervasio Mayan Ruins before the heat builds
  2. Continue south to Playa Palancar Beach Club for lunch and beach time
  3. Add the Palancar & Colombia Reefs + El Cielo snorkel trip by boat from Palancar if the timing lines up
  4. Taxi back up the coast road to your pier

Punta Sur Eco Beach Park is the alternative full-day anchor — wilder and emptier than Palancar, about 40 minutes each way.

Getting around from the ship

Your pier decides your day: Punta Langosta is in downtown San Miguel and walkable, while the International Pier and Puerta Maya sit about 5 km south of town and need a taxi for almost everything. Cozumel Parks states there is no public transport to Chankanaab, Punta Sur or San Gervasio, so taxis (fares vary by pier and group size — agree before boarding) or a rental vehicle are how cruisers reach the parks and beach clubs.

OptionTypical priceNotes
Walking (from Punta Langosta only)Punta Langosta docks in downtown San Miguel, so the waterfront, the ferry pier area and the Island Museum are on foot — Cozumel Parks puts the Museum 5 minutes by vehicle from Punta Langosta and 7 minutes on foot from the Fiscal (ferry) Pier. From the southern piers, take a taxi into town instead of walking.
TaxiChankanaab reference: US$15 for 1-4 people from Puerta Maya or International Pier, US$17 from Punta Langosta (Cozumel Parks) approx.Taxis are the main way to the parks and beach clubs, and there is no public transport to Chankanaab, Punta Sur or San Gervasio. Cozumel Parks publishes reference fares and advises asking about the fare and agreeing it before boarding, as it varies by departure point and number of passengers. For Punta Sur it warns the taxi stays during the visit because of the park's size and distance.
Rental / own vehicleCozumel Parks recommends exploring Punta Sur in your own or a rented vehicle because of its size, and notes there is no public transport to the park. Useful for combining Punta Sur, the east side and San Gervasio in one day.
Passenger ferry to Playa del CarmenUltramar runs the Playa del Carmen-Cozumel passenger route from the Fiscal Pier in downtown San Miguel. Playa Palancar's official site puts the crossing at approximately 35 minutes with Winjet or Ultramar. A DIY mainland trip needs two crossings plus buffer — check the current sailing times on the operator's site and protect your all-aboard time.

Cruise-stop questions

Which pier will my ship use in Cozumel?

There are three: Punta Langosta in downtown San Miguel, and the International Pier and Puerta Maya about 5 km south. Lines announce the pier closer to sailing; the practical difference is that only Punta Langosta lets you walk into town — the southern piers need a taxi for everything.

Can you walk to a beach from the Cozumel cruise piers?

Not really — there is no good swimming beach at any pier. The closest full beach setup is Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park, about 10–15 minutes by taxi from the southern piers (about 30 from Punta Langosta), with official park admission from MX$418.

Is the ferry to Playa del Carmen worth it on a cruise day?

It is possible but tight: the crossing takes about 35–45 minutes each way, plus waits at both ends, which eats half your port day before you do anything on the mainland. Most cruisers get more from the day by staying on Cozumel — and if you go, work backwards from all-aboard, not from the last ferry.

How far is Punta Sur from the cruise piers?

About 40 minutes by vehicle each way, at the far south of the island. That makes it a deliberate half-to-full-day choice, not a quick stop — the reward is the island's least-developed beach and its lighthouse and lagoon.
