What to do in Nassau on a cruise stop

Quick answer

Nassau is the classic walk-off-the-ship port: your ship docks at Prince George Wharf in the middle of downtown, so Bay Street, the Straw Market and the historic squares start at the end of the pier. A typical call gives you about 9 hours — enough for the downtown sights plus one anchor activity, either a beach or the Atlantis day pass on Paradise Island. If you do one thing beyond downtown, make it Atlantis's Aquaventure — just know day passes are priced at booking and sell out on busy days.

Two ways to spend the day

If you have ~4 hours

  1. Start at Parliament Square & Rawson Square, two minutes from the pier
  2. Walk Bay Street & the Straw Market for the downtown flavour
  3. Climb to Queen's Staircase & Fort Fincastle for the view over the harbour
  4. Finish with a swim at Junkanoo Beach, a 13-minute walk back toward the ship

All walking, all free except snacks — the easiest half-day in the Caribbean.

Full day

  1. Water taxi or taxi over the bridge to Atlantis Paradise Island — Aquaventure Day Pass, and give it the middle of the day
  2. Back downtown for a late lunch at Arawak Cay — The Fish Fry
  3. Wander Bay Street & the Straw Market on the way back to the ship

Atlantis day passes are priced at booking and can sell out when several ships are in — book before you sail on a busy day. Swapping Atlantis for Cable Beach & Baha Mar makes the same shape of day at a slower pace.

Getting around from the ship

Prince George Wharf docks ships right in downtown Nassau, so Bay Street, the Straw Market, Parliament Square and Junkanoo Beach are all walkable in under about 15 minutes. For Paradise Island, Cable Beach and sights further west, cruisers use zone-fare taxis, the water taxi across the harbour, or the local jitney buses — there is no Uber or Lyft.

OptionTypical priceNotes
WalkingThe port's own attraction guide puts the Straw Market a few steps away, Parliament Square a 2-minute walk, the Queen's Staircase a 13-minute walk and Junkanoo Beach a 13-minute walk from the Port.
TaxiTaxis are readily available outside the cruise terminal and at hotels, and fares are fixed by zone rather than metered. Atlantis says a taxi from downtown / the cruise terminal to Atlantis Paradise Island takes about 10-20 minutes and advises bringing cash, as many transportation companies do not take credit cards.
Water taxi / ferry to Paradise IslandAbout $7 per person each way approx.Ferry boats (water taxis) run between Nassau and Paradise Island with a waterfront view of Nassau Harbour. The Nassau Paradise Island site says tickets are sold at the tour desk at Woodes Rogers Wharf, cost about $7 per person and take approximately 10 minutes each way; Atlantis says cruise passengers can board at the Ferry Terminal at Nassau Cruise Port and that return times can vary by season — confirm the return sailing before you go.
Jitney busApproximately $1.50 per person one-way approx.Local buses known as jitneys run in downtown Nassau and along the Cable Beach strip several times a day — the budget way west to Cable Beach. Exact change is required and you pay as you exit the bus. Jitneys do not go to Paradise Island.

Cruise-stop questions

Can you walk off the ship and explore Nassau on your own?

Yes — Nassau is one of the easiest ports in the Caribbean for it. Ships dock at Prince George Wharf in downtown Nassau, and Parliament Square, Bay Street and the Straw Market are all within a few minutes' walk of the pier.

How do you get to Atlantis from the cruise port?

Two ways: a taxi over the Sir Sidney Poitier Bridge, or the water taxi from near the wharf (about US$7 per person, approximate). Atlantis sells Aquaventure day passes to cruise visitors, but the price is set at booking and varies — there is no fixed published price.

Is there a beach within walking distance of the Nassau cruise port?

Yes — Junkanoo Beach is about a 13-minute walk (5 minutes by taxi) from Prince George Wharf and is free to use. Cable Beach, the bigger resort beach, is about 5 miles west and needs a taxi or jitney.

How long do cruise ships stay in Nassau?

In our schedule data the typical Nassau call runs about 9 hours — a median arrival of 08:00 and departure of 17:00 across 440 scheduled calls. That is enough for downtown plus one major activity, not downtown plus two.
