What to do in Philipsburg on a cruise stop
Quick answer
St. Maarten is two countries on one small island: the Dutch side, where your ship docks at Philipsburg, and the French side (St. Martin) a short drive north. Philipsburg's boardwalk, beach and Front Street shopping start a short walk from the pier, and a typical 10-hour call is enough to add one excursion — most famously watching jets land over Maho Beach. If time is short, the Boardwalk and Great Bay Beach are the port's built-in easy day.

How busy does it get?
This is a high-volume port — 612 scheduled calls in our data, the most of any port of call we track, with a typical day around 7,000 passengers and peak days over 31,000. December to March is the crush; our scheduled coverage thins out after April, when far fewer ships call.
Your own day can land anywhere in that range — check your date on the Philipsburg crowd calendar before you plan around the crowds.

Weather, in visitor terms
Warm and breezy year-round, highs of 78–84°F. February to April is the driest, most reliable window (rain on under a quarter of days in March). The wet season builds from August and peaks September–November, with rain on about half of days — plan the French-side trip earlier in the day then.

Two ways to spend the day
If you have ~4 hours
- Walk or water-taxi to the Philipsburg Boardwalk and Great Bay Beach
- Swim and beach time right off the boardwalk
- Stroll Front Street shopping and the Philipsburg Courthouse and Walter Plantz Square on the way back
The zero-logistics plan: everything here is within Philipsburg itself.
Full day
- Taxi to Maho Beach plane spotting for the late-morning wide-body arrivals
- Continue over to Marigot, French-side capital, for lunch and the waterfront market
- Climb to Fort Louis above Marigot for the view back to your ship
- Taxi back to Philipsburg with time for Front Street
Taxis use the official government fare table — Cruise Port to Maho Beach is US$25 for 1–2 passengers. The zipline day (Rainforest Adventures' Flying Dutchman or Loterie Farm) is the alternative full-day anchor; pick one, not both.
Getting around from the ship
Ships dock at the Dr. A.C. Wathey Pier in Philipsburg, and Philipsburg itself - a four-street capital under a mile long, with the Boardwalk, Great Bay Beach and Front Street - is the easy walkable option, reachable on foot or by water taxi per the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau. For anywhere else on the island, government-regulated zone taxis are the standard option, with minivan buses linking Philipsburg, Marigot and the French side.
| Option | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Walking | Philipsburg is a four-street town, all less than a mile long, between Great Bay Beach and the Great Salt Pond, and the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau describes Philipsburg as a short walk, drive or water taxi ride from the port. The boardwalk, Great Bay Beach, Front Street and the Courthouse are all in this walkable core. | |
| Water taxi to Philipsburg | The Tourist Bureau lists a water taxi as one of the ways to get from the cruise port into Philipsburg, landing on the Philipsburg waterfront by the Boardwalk and Great Bay Beach. No fare for the water taxi was published on the official tourism pages checked, so confirm the price at the booth before boarding. | |
| Government-regulated taxi | Cruise Port to Philipsburg $10 for 1-2 passengers; Cruise Port to Maho Beach $25 for 1-2 passengers (official fare table) approx. | Sint Maarten taxi fares are government-regulated and set by zone-to-zone pricing, not meters. Fares are quoted for 1-2 passengers at the base rate, with lower per-person rates for 3-5 and 6+ passengers; a 25% surcharge applies 10:00 PM-6:00 AM and on official public holidays. Use official taxis (license plate starts with 'TAXI', driver displays a valid permit) and confirm the fare chart on request. |
| Public bus (minivans) | A public-private bus system of minivans connects the two sides of the island; buses to Philipsburg leave from the Marigot bus station and from French Quarter, and Marigot's station also connects to Grand Case, Orient Bay and French Quarter. Philipsburg itself also lists local bus options. Confirm the route card and fare with the driver, as buses do not pick up inside the cruise port in the sources checked. |

Cruise-stop questions
Can you walk from the cruise port into Philipsburg?
Yes — Philipsburg is a compact four-street town, and the Boardwalk and Great Bay Beach are a short walk, drive or water-taxi ride from the pier. Front Street, the main shopping street, sits one block behind the boardwalk.
How much is a taxi from the St. Maarten cruise port to Maho Beach?
Taxis run on an official government fare table published by the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau: US$25 for 1–2 passengers from the cruise port to Maho Beach, and US$10 into Philipsburg. Confirm the fare before you set off, as the table prices per trip, not per person.
Is the French side worth visiting on a port day?
If you have most of the day, yes — Marigot is a genuinely different-feeling capital (French, quieter, good food) about 30 minutes from the pier, and Fort Louis above it has the island's best harbour view. On a short call, stay in Philipsburg instead of spending the day in a taxi.
What is the Flying Dutchman zipline?
Rainforest Adventures at Rockland Estate bills the Flying Dutchman as the steepest zipline in the world, dropping from Sentry Hill above Philipsburg. It is a ticketed half-day activity (top price band) — book the earliest slot you can so the rest of the day stays flexible.
